Wow, We’re Screwed

Posted by Bruno on November 8th, 2007

The true consequences of I-960 are just starting to be felt in Olympia. Legislators can take some solace in the fact that I-747, a past Tim Eyman initiative, was just declared unconstitutional. I-747 passed in 2001. Could it take 6 years for I-960 to meet the same fate?

Initiatives

Austin Jenkins offers some good updates on R-4204, which would have required a simple 51% majority to pass a education funding (it currently requires 60%): Supporters are stunned and bummed. They’ve been trying for more than a decade to muster the two-thirds vote in the Legislature to put the question before voters. It finally happened [...]

Wow – These Guys Really Hate Transit

Posted by Matski on October 12th, 2007

Since Bruno won’t let me post anything inflammatory on OrphanRoad, I’ll have to go off on the Seattle Times here.  Their headline today: “Should You Trust Sound Transit?” You’re all smart people, so I won’t bore you with a discussion of the semiotics of this statement (basically, by asking the question, it sets up a [...]

Nickels vs. the Council

Posted by Bruno on October 6th, 2007

Nice account of how hizzoner has been steamrolling the seven dwarfs: “The mayor is ignoring (a) cherished principle of our democracy: the separation of powers. No executive, whether they are President George W. Bush or Mayor Nickels, can ignore legislative authority, particularly when it comes to the administration of something as fundamental as equal justice [...]

On Global Warming

Posted by Bruno on September 28th, 2007

Apropos of President Bush’s speech on global warming, King County Exec Ron Sims has an op-ed in yesterday’s Seattle Times urging a “no” vote on our local Prop. 1, the joint “Roads and Transit” measure. I already blogged a bit on the piece itself over at Orphan Road, but I want to take a step [...]

Jennifer Dunn

Died today: A statement issued by the office of her son, King County Councilman Reagan Dunn, said, “Jennifer collapsed from a pulmonary embolism in her Alexandria, Va., apartment and never regained consciousness. She passed peacefully surrounded by family.” …. “Jennifer was a trailblazer for women who cleared the way for others to follow with a [...]

Seattle Schools

Posted by Bruno on July 28th, 2007

Josh Feit has a great post on how the current crop of Seattle School Board candidates are forging new ideas on race and integration after this year’s Supreme Court decision.

Seattle Center

Posted by Bruno on July 21st, 2007

Brendan Kiley has an engaging feature on Seattle Center in this week’s Stranger. There are four options on the table for how to modernize the place, and Kiley is advocating for the fourth, Plan 4, which would go the farthest in turning the Center into more of a park (the Times has a video fly-through [...]

15th Avenue Jumps the Shark

Posted by Matski on July 17th, 2007

Alas for my beloved neighborhood — the stretch of 15th Ave that runs (roughly) between Aloha and John.  Former organic food store Rainbow Groceries is being replaced, not by another one-named bar/restaurant as expected but by … the Red Balloon Company? I can only echo the comments made on Seattlest — wtf?

I love this town.
