He Died Bombs For Our Sins

Posted by Apocalypse Tom on March 6th, 2008

The U.S. Air Force has adopted the phrase “Above All” as its new slogan.
My evidence is strictly circumstantial, but I regard the Air Force slogan’s similarity to the results of a Youtube search for the phrase as…probably more than coincidental. Really, how much less subtle could this be?

To paraphrase Mitt Romney, who let [...]

Beckett and the Christian Right

Posted by Matski on October 18th, 2007

I’m no Beckett scholar, but for some reason I find myself re-reading the second act of Waiting for Godot this am.
Personally, I take the play as a denunciation of human inaction arising from the (mistaken) belief that someone (Godot) is going to magically appear and save us, if only we wait faithfully for his coming. [...]

A Vatican official suspended after being caught on hidden camera making advances to a young man says he is not gay and was only pretending to be gay as part of his work.
In an interview published Sunday, Monsignor Tommaso Stenico told La Repubblica daily he frequented online gay chat rooms and met with gay men [...]

Father Robert Drinan, Congressman

Posted by Bruno on January 31st, 2007

I didn’t know anything about the late Drinan, who was both a congressman from Boston and a Roman Catholic priest until Pope John Paull II made him step down (priests should be loyal to the Vatican and to God, the Pope reasonably argued).
This was of course, back in the 1970s, when priests like [...]

Holy Book Jujitsu

Posted by Bruno on January 3rd, 2007

If you haven’t been following the latest annoying right-wing meme (and you are forgiven for not doing so), Rep. Virgil Goode is up in arms about Rep.-Elect Keith Ellison’s decision to use the Koran for his ceremonial post-swearing-in photo op (that’s right, contrary to popular belief you don’t swear your oath on the bible, but [...]

Those Wacky Catholics

Posted by Matski on June 15th, 2006

Those wacky Catholics are at it again. This time: replacing elements of the current liturgy with translations “closer to the original Latin”.
Among the changes:
Catholics will have to learn longer and more awkward versions of familiar prayers. For example, instead of saying, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you,” in the prayer before [...]

The Thursday Styles section reveals how mohawks are the new monk cut:
“There’s a charm in being the rebel,” said Edmund Gibbs, a professor of church growth at Fuller Theological Seminary and the author of books on alternative Christian culture. Besides, he said, rebellion is consistent with the lessons of the Bible.
“If evangelicalism means a commitment [...]

A Universe, Precariously Standing on its End

Posted by Matski on August 29th, 2005

It fascinates me that even with the war, hurricanes, a housing price bubble and more, it’s been such a slow-boil kind of summer that intelligent design has become a topic du jour. Maybe I’m not the only one with fond memories of long nights spent in dorm hallways, quoting philosophers half-understood. At least it [...]

Santorum

Posted by Bruno on July 14th, 2005

The Bull Moose minces no words:
You have to give Santorum credit. You really have to put your mind to it to be this clueless. If there was a Nobel Prize for ignorance, Santorum would be the hands down winner. If there was a Super Bowl of Stupidity, Santorum would win the trophy. If there was [...]
