    Gotta agree with The Prof about Spring Awakening…

    Might I recommend these newish musicals as more nuanced choices. They are well written, interesting, and have good music:
    In the Heights
    The Last Five Years
    The Wild Party (John Michael LaChuisa)

    Tom — that was my point. Grease (the stage version, not the sanitized Film version), was racy, raunchy, and ground-breaking in it’s oh-so-much-fun fantasy of 1950′s America.

    Spring Awakening, IMO, is all shock, no culture.
