More Blackwater

Posted by Bruno on September 20th, 2007

U.S. Diplomats pretty much can’t leave the Green Zone, now that Blackwater Security’s been shut down:
The episode has seriously handicapped the daily operations of the State Department at a time when the focus of the American effort here has shifted to outreach to tribes, local leaders and ordinary citizens in neighborhoods. On Tuesday, the embassy [...]

Oh, Canada!

Posted by Bruno on September 20th, 2007

I’ve been waiting for this day, when the loonie would match the greenback.
I’ve had a $20 Canadian bill sitting on my night stand from my last trip to Canada a year or two ago. It’s earned about 25% just sitting there. Best investment I’ve made in a while.
P.S.: The Euro’s trading [...]

A Series of Tubes

Posted by Bruno on September 20th, 2007

The first mention of the “World Wide Web,” from a 1993 article in the newly-liberated New York Times archives:
Making all this information relatively easy to retrieve is a system known as Wide Area Information Server, or WAIS. More than 300 WAIS data bases are now accessible without charge, and a standards committee is finishing work [...]

Er, Rudy?

Posted by Matski on September 19th, 2007

Somebody find Rudy’s pills, quick:
Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani urged NATO to admit Australia, India, Israel, Japan and Singapore on Wednesday as part of proposals to combat Islamic extremism …

As part of our series, we examined what we think a good and successful effort to reform [...]

Clinton’s Health Care Plan

Posted by Matski on September 17th, 2007

As promised, Hillary Clinton unveiled her own health care plan today.
I’m not sure how her plan would actually help most Americans (probably about as much as Edwards’ or Obama’s plans would, elements of which Clinton’s plan clearly cops). But it’s a triumph of PR.
Clinton is clearly keeping one eye squarely on the past with [...]

Blackwater

File under, “I’m surprised it took this long”:
BAGHDAD (AP) — The Iraqi government said Monday that it was revoking the license of an American security firm accused of involvement in the deaths of eight civilians in a firefight that followed a car bomb explosion near a State Department motorcade.
The Interior Ministry said it would prosecute [...]
