The metallic object - bigger than a golf ball and as heavy as a soup can - that crashed through a Freehold Township, N.J., home’s roof on Jan. 2 was not a meteorite after all, geologists said yesterday.

Instead, the scientists said, it was a stainless-steel alloy and likely “orbital debris,” or scrap iron.

Question remains: Where did it fall from?

“That’s the $64,000 question,” Rutgers University geologist Jeremy Delaney said. “And there’s probably no way to answer it.”
