I have to say, I think Chris Matthews comes off pretty well in this 2003 Weekly Standard gloat-fest:
“This invasion of Iraq, if it goes off, will join the Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Desert One, Beirut, and Somalia in the history of military catastrophe. What will set it apart, distinguishing it for all time, is the immense–and transparent–political stupidity.”
–Chris Matthews, San Francisco Chronicle, August 25, 2002
Of course, that was August 2002, and as White House Chief of Staff Andy Card helpfully pointed out at the time, “from a marketing point of view, you don’t introduce new products in August.”
Matthews, like many of us, went a bit more wobbly as the marketing campaign got underway, with such memorable milestones as the October farce of a debate in the Senate, the November obliteration of Max Clelland, and the now-disgraced closing arguments from Colin Powell at the U.N. the following February.
