(oh yeah, I said it.)
I’ve got Obama-fatigue here at BATP, so let’s switch focus to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for a bit. From Greg Sargent:
Former President Bill Clinton’s approval rating is nearly twice that of the current resident of the White House, a new Gallup poll finds. Clinton is viewed favorably by 63% of the poll’s respondents — nearly twice as many as have a positive view of President Bush in some polls. That’s Clinton’s highest favorability rating since 1998, and near his all-time high of 66% in 1993. Meanwhile, Clinton is viewed unfavorably by roughly the same amount of people who view Bush favorably in some polls — 35%. Given these numbers, one wonders whether pundits will keep describing the former President as nothing but a liability to Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign.
The Al Gore strategy of keeping Bill in a box sounds silly in light of these numbers (though there’s a strong case for keeping parts of him in said box). I’m sure the discussions of when and how to roll out Bill are raging inside the HIllary camp, so I’ll just put in my vote right now: more Bill.
At this point, with the way people feel about the country, I bet if Hillary (as she likes to be called) came right out and said, “look, to be honest, the whole point of my campaign is simply to do an end-run around the 22nd Amendment and restore my husband to the oval office,” she’d get 60% in the general.
