It’s a start:
Plenty of businesses all over the Puget Sound region have been selling biodiesel for years, and Seattle has long been an early leader in its use. But Safeway’s entrance into the market marks the first time such a prominent chain has taken the plunge into alternative fuels, another indication that the demand is growing.
At the Safeway pump station on Admiral Way this morning, Seattle Mayor Greg Nichols pumped the station’s first tank of biodiesel into Dr. Dan’s Volkswagen.
Umm… who’s this “Greg Nichols” character and what has he done with our Mayor?
Seriously though… glad to see Safeway getting into the game. It’s only B20 (i.e. 20% bio, 80% petroleum), but it’s something. Of course, until biodiesel or ethanol or any of the “alt-fuels” develop the robust pipe network that traditional gasoline uses, it’s going to be hard to scale. Given that, it’s still impressive that the price difference is just over 10%. Coupled with the fact that diesel gets better mileage, and it’s actually a steal. Assuming, of course, you have a car that can use it.
