If you haven’t been following the latest annoying right-wing meme (and you are forgiven for not doing so), Rep. Virgil Goode is up in arms about Rep.-Elect Keith Ellison’s decision to use the Koran for his ceremonial post-swearing-in photo op (that’s right, contrary to popular belief you don’t swear your oath on the bible, but you do get to use any book you want for the staged photo op afterward).
Anyway, the story takes a hilarious turn as Ellison brilliantly decides to use a copy of the Koran owned by none other than Thomas Jefferson for said photo-op. Adding insult to injury, Jefferson’s estate (and most likely the Koran itself) is located in Goode’s home district in central VA.
P.S. The Ellison story was featured on NPR’s To The Point today, and included some interesting stats on the religious breakdown of Congress. Here’s the 109th. No info yet on the 110th, I guess, but I was surprised to learn that the Catholics and Jews combined now outnumber the mainline Protestants. Oh, and there are also two Buddhists now, but apparently that doesn’t bother Rep. Goode.
