Vote… or not

Posted by Bruno on November 2nd, 2006

If you want to get any sleep at all in the next few days, do not read this article on the current sorry state of electronic voting systems.

I try not to get paranoid about this, and I honestly don’t believe that the CEO of Diebold is rigging the elections to favor Republicans. Well… I mostly don’t believe it. However — I have enough experience in the IT industry to know that big projects like this are always a disaster the first few times out.

Voter turnout in this election is likely to be at or under 50%. The least you can do for the less-than-half the population that bothers to leave their house next Tuesday and do their civic duty is make sure their votes are counted.

Heck, maybe the voting machines are going to pull a butterfly and sweep in Democrats. That would be just as bad, because then it would give the opposition the ability to declare the results illegitimate.

In the meantime, if you happen to come across a Sequoia voting system on Nov. 7, you can apparently just reach around back, hit the reset button, and vote as many times as you want. The State of California is aware of this, and their solution is to instruct the 70-year-old poll workers “to be very vigilant during the Election Day to anyone spending too much time in the booth.”

Feel better now?
