David Goldstein injects a much-needed reality check into the current debate over the Seattle Public Schools. He’s right that we’re nowhere near the worst urban school district in America. Far, far from it. If you’re a local, read the whole thing.

We may not be the worst, but that ain’t saying much. I have a friend who teaches at a jr. high school in the Beacon Hill area, and he gets pretty heated when he starts talking about outdated books, of which there aren’t enough to hand out in order to give homework assignments, lack of computers, and a crumbling facility in which to work in. He pretty much shuts down around the part where he starts talking about having to teach 30+ students per period.
I have a feeling this is not an isolated event in this area, and while we may not be at Alabama levels of incompetency, the current funding system is in need of rehauling.
all of which have little to do with the topic at hand, sorry.
