Here’s an intriguing quote from a worthy John Broder piece in Week in Review:
“L.B.J. lamented that he would listen to anyone who had a plan that met American goals and got the troops out of Vietnam,” Mr. Foyle said. “Nobody had one.”
THAT gave Richard Nixon freedom to run on a vague antiwar platform, promising to achieve “peace with honor” without having to say how he would do it. Some parodied his position as Mr. Nixon’s “secret plan.” But as a political strategy it worked. He won the White House, while it was five years before American troops were out of Vietnam.
Hmmm. Has anyone done polling on the phrase “Timetable for Victorious Withdrawal”?
Any Democrats out there want to look into this?
