Oh Boy. Another Massively Important Geo-Political Event for Bush to Deal With

Well, looks like the inevitable is finally happening and Castro seems about to give up the fantasma. I’m inspired to give you a link to a song by the most excellent early ’90s (Indie Pop) Super Grupo Cracker (aka Camper Van Beethoven) – Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now).
While you enjoy that punk-lite classico, let me momentarily wax psuedo-poetic and meta-contemplate El Presidente’s opportunity/crisis vis a vis Cuba.
The foreign-policy moment that the GOP has been preparing for for over 40 years is seemingly upon us. Hell, even when the Republicans didn’t think foreign policy was cool they cared about Cuba. So I wonder how the Bumbler in Chief will sink to his own level of incompetence in this historic moment.
I also wonder how this will change domestic politics. So much of Republican foreign policy and international “thought” is built on a Cuba-facing foundation, how will they handle “success?” Even closer to home, now that the Cuban community of El Condado de Dade will no longer have Fidel to hiss at, do they start caring about things like, oh, say, health care? Does this mean that Florida is solidly Blue in ’08?
Guess we should all wait until the Hombre actually passes before we consider these things in too much depth, but it’s a welcome distraction from the mess in the Middle East.
See you at the W in Havana.
