Though Toyota gets all the buzz, it should be noted that Honda’s actually a much “greener” company on the whole. For example, Honda makes fewer SUVs and trucks, which is one reason their overall fleet fuel economy is the best of any major auto maker. Honda also has not joined (last I checked) the main auto-industry lobbying group, the AAMA. The AAMA lobbies against higher CAFE fuel economy standards.
Now, Honda’s R&D lab in Ohio has been Certified LEED Gold, which means that it’s a very, very green building. It’s not a plant, mind you, but an R&D facility. Nevertheless, we’ve come a long way from Ford’s River Rouge Plant, where at one time you could tell what color cars they were making that day by the color of the Rouge River.
