Looks like Kenny Lay got the easy way out.
The conspiracy theorist in me is convinced this is sepuku, but even so the kid in me wishes this guy would have had to face the wrath of America’s incarcerated poorest for at least a little while. [And, anyway, isn't sepuku supposed to be for those who have lived generally honorable lives but ultimately fail? Probably not what you'd call the suicide of a shameless thief.]
In any case, I suppose it’s a fitting end for someone who made his public career staying defiantly one step ahead of the law.
Even though Enron’s transgressions were committed under the Clinton administration, there’s no better symbol of America’s cynicism and decadence under Bush than this guy, who golfed with Nimrod when Nimrod “ran” Texas.
So, before Lay and Enron are remembered only on the Pub Quiz circuit, once more let’s recall how close Lay and Bush were:
