Not to diminish what is a very, very good thing — and even as a casual news observer, I was excited about it — but is it possible that the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was facilitated by events way beyond U.S. or legitimate Iraqi control? As in what may have happened with Saddam’s sons, for example? I mean, I’ve seen the trailer for Syriana — and heard George Clooney interviewed about it — so I know that not everything is what it seems in the Middle East.
Or even more ominous, did the Al Qaeda home office simply finally clip Zarqawi’s wings? Especially now that Somalia seems to be the next place they might set up shop? (If this were a superhero movie, it would be the last scene of the film, setting the stage for the sequel.)
That said, I’m perfectly happy to take this story at face value — probably one of the few times we should be excited that the military swooped down and creamed a house full of nasties. (It’s like the best moments of 24!) They got him!

Obama staffs up, Detroit comes to DC and finally, Iraq and the US come to a security agreement.

Hmm . . . teen smoking declining because of the massive tobacco settlement? Couldn’t it also be because municipalities have raised taxes on cigarettes like 8000 percent, smoking is banned in many places, the general anti-smoking climate in the country or any of a host of more important reasons other than trial attorneys and overzealous attorneys general? The tobacco settlement was a joke — total windfall for states who frittered away the money on many things other than health.
