A report on CNN this morning featured This company which claims that they can add water to your car’s gasoline and boost fuel economy by 50%.
Of course, you’ve got to always take these things with a grain of salt. A quick Google search turns up this Free Republic thread which casts some doubt. Say what you will about the Freepers, they’re chock-full of just the sort of retired engineers and History Channel afficionados (sorry, Professor) who would know something about this kind of thing:
All kinds of cool technology, but at the heart it’s just using the expansion of water from liquid phase to vapor phase. Water injection was first used successfully in WWII piston aircraft engines.
Anyway, it’s important to remember that this technology’s out there, just waiting to be tapped. Keep it in mind the next time you see GM and Ford bitch and moan on Capitol Hill about how high fuel-economy standards will just plain put them out of business.
