Anyone seen these ads for Southern Comfort on TV lately? Voiceovers of hip folks at bars ordering a SoCo & lime. Like most people, I’ve had too many bad experiences with SoCo. But I have managed to put down a SoCo and lime from time to time.

What’s funny about the ad is that everyone in it says they want to “start off” with SoCo and lime. They’re trying to brand themselves as your first shot of the night. It’s a funny admission: “we know that no one can possibly drink our liquor as often as say, Bacardi, so just take one shot and then return to your regularly scheduled gin and tonic. Please?”

This is advertising in the 21st century: find your niche and hold on for dear life.
