Lawrence O’Donnell and Tucker Carlson were arguing about the Cheney incident last night on MSNBC. Carlson egged him on: “What could Cheney possibly have to hide?” O’Donnell didn’t mince words, calmly replying: “That he would have failed a breathalyzer test.” Straight up.
I think O’Donnell’s wrong. I doubt Cheney was drunk, even though he did get cited for a couple of D.U.I.s in his younger days (who doesn’t drive drunk in Wyoming?). Andrew Sullivan’s Occam’s Razor explanation seems plausible (Cheney didn’t tell the press immediately because he’s the king and they are wortheless peons), and Mike Crowley’s idea is pretty on the money (Cheney doesn’t drink b/c he’s a heartbeat away from the presidency).
But neither mention what seems the most likely: would a guy of Cheney’s advanced age and poor health get wasted AND exert himself physically like that? Seems awful risky for a guy who believes that he is the one man who can protect America from all evildoers. Doesn’t fit the profile, methinks.
