Transit Strike

Posted by Bruno on December 21st, 2005

In NYC for the holidays, and I can’t bring myself to find much sympathy for the transit workers. The city’s pretty bolloxed up right now, and it couldn’t be a worse time. The weather’s cold, and people are trying to trickle down and spend money in these last few days before the holidays.

These guys have a great deal going, to be honest, compared to most workers in America. They want to retire at 55. At that rate, many of them will spend more years drawing pensions than they did actually working. Does that sound sustainable to you? Me neither.

Anyway, there’s a good roundup of the pro-worker argument at Nathan Newman’s blog, though Newman himself is on vacation. Decide for yourself.

Me, I think the million dollars a day the union is being fined would be better spent organizing workers in other industries. That will generate more sympathetic ears all around.
