With the brouhaha surrounding Senator McCain’s attempt to clarify American policy regarding treatment of detainees by requiring American personnel to follow the Army Field Manual practices on the treatment of prisoners, reasonable people wondered how an administration that is so vehemently opposed to McCain’s amendment might work around the overwhelming support for the amendment in the Senate.
Could the amendment be killed in conference committee? Could Vice President Cheney use reason and persuasion to talk the Senate out of it? What about updating the Army Field Manual list of acceptable interrogation practices, with new and classified techniques?
Somebody’s going to get a gold star for this one.
