Cocooning, Too

Posted by Contrarian on December 23rd, 2005

Something obvious that occurred to me long after yesterday’s post about liberal-left-progressive cocooning regarding the New York City transit strike is how much worse it was to try to spin it as some sort of workers’ revolt (tangential parenthetical to liberal-left-progressives who spin: Don’t do it; it’s what makes Contrarians).

Which is to say, while, yes, it’s correct to note that on the first day of the strike, 52% of New Yorkers supported the union, the bigger issue here is that first day 40% of New Yorkers actually supported the MTA, an entity that most, if not all, New Yorkers are ambivalent about — if not downright hostile towards.

So take comfort in the fact that a “majority” of New Yorkers supported the union over management on that first day, but just understand who we’re dealing with — because it’s pretty much like a Republican taking comfort in the sort of statistic that said 52% of Americans supported George Bush over Osama bin Laden. Anyone with any sense of intellectual honesty would be scratching his head, “You mean to say 40% of Americans support UBL?”

By the second day, of course, a plurality of New Yorkers actually supported management over the union. That’s a plurality of New Yorkers supporting the MTA. And that’s when you know you’re screwed.
