Dump McDermott

Josh Feit says what we’re all thinking (well, all 5 of us Seattle neo-liberals, anyway): it’s time for Jim to go.

What’s my beef with Baghdad Jim? After all, he’s a good liberal: against the war, against Bush’s tax cuts, and against Bush’s attempt to privatize Social Security. The truth is, I don’t have many complaints about McDermott’s politics. I do have a problem with his inability to get stuff done. We’re wasting a safe Democratic seat on a guy who, after 16 years, has no clout or ability to impact policy.

Unfortunately, dumping a nine-term congressman in favor of a freshman is not the easiest way to “get stuff done.” Freshman congressmen lack the seniority to do exactly that. But what other choice do we have? I mean, I’m glad that there’s a congressional progressive caucus and I’m glad that Rep. McDermott’s a member. But, as they say, what have you done for me lately?
