Like most people inside my particular bubble, I wondered what on earth Bush was thinking by nominating Harriet Miers to replace Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court. The President’s own counsel on the court? Did they learn nothing with that whole FEMA thing? And I’m not an elitist — I swear, no! — but [...]

Rahm Emanuel

Posted by Bruno on October 20th, 2005

The former Clinton Aide turned House Representative turned DCCC chair is an interesting cat. Via Kos via Rolling Stone we learn:
And there’s the story of how, the night after Clinton was elected, Emanuel was so angry at the president’s enemies that he stood up at a celebratory dinner with colleagues from the campaign, grabbed [...]

More on the Grand Neocon Theory

Posted by Bruno on October 20th, 2005

The other day I argued that the tie that binds foreign-policy neocons with domestic-policy Republicans like Tom DeLay is one singular axiom: For maximum mobility, use the smallest alliance possible to achieve victory. This is how the Iraq war was waged: getting the support of NATO or the UN would have meant watering down [...]

Rhode Island

Posted by Bruno on October 19th, 2005

The President’s approval rating in Rhode Island is 29%, with a disapproval of 70%. That 41-point gap is the highest of any state in the nation. So if you’re Sen. Lincoln Chafee, and you’re running for re-election in ‘06, you have two options:
1. Become an Independent (like fellow blue-state New Englander Jim [...]

Monorail, Shortened

Posted by Bruno on October 18th, 2005

After all that fuss, a new plan is emerging for the troubled Seattle Monorail. The old, 13.6 mile proposal would have cost $11 billion, including financing, over 47 years. The new proposal shaves that down to under $4 billion, paid over 31 years. Construction costs drop from $2.1B to $1.7B.
It [...]

Colbert

Posted by Bruno on October 18th, 2005

If you missed it, you should know that it was frickin’ brilliant. Stephen Colbert has created the ultimate windbag pundit, with heavy doses of O’Reilly, but also shades of Matthews, Brit Hume, and Neil Cavuto. It’s amazing stuff.

Wholly-owned

Posted by Bruno on October 18th, 2005

The U.S. Military is, unfortunately, a perceived as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Republican Party. Anyone who’s interested in seeing that change should probably start here.

As I speculate on our latest episode, I have a hard time believing that Miers was anyone’s call but Bush’s, and Bush’s alone. Makes me laugh thinking of the argument Cheney and Rove must’ve had after the Miers howler:
Dick: “I thought you were watching him?”
Karl: “Nyuh-uh. Mondays are YOUR day to watch [...]
