Ok, he’s convinced me. I’m never going to use the word islamofascism again. I was uncomfortable with the word, but never really knew why. Now I understand, thanks to a random commenter at TPMCafe:

But I also suspect two more contemporary motives:

One is to blur the distinction between militant Islamist fundamentalism (e.g., al-Quada) and Baathism - thus making an oblique, backdoor connection between 9/11 and Saddam. The other, perhaps, is the awkwardness of “Islamist fundamentalism” for people who have aligned themselves with fundamentalists, albeit of a different sectarian stripe.

One of Darwin’s greatest insights was that we can act in our own self-interest without being conscious of it. That’s the key to understanding evolution. And many other things. No vast conspiracy needed. Just simple survival instincts.
