Church Attendance Inflated

Posted by Bruno on June 6th, 2005

Via Sullivan, I find this surprising information on Church attendance. The gist? more people say they go to church than actually do. Only about 26% of us attend Church nationally, as opposed to the 40% or so that’s usually reported.

Two things leap out at me:

1. Poltiics-wise, does it really matter if that other 14% actually attends? Clearly they want the pollsters to think they’re there, so they have religious inclinations.

2. These numbers are often cited vis-a-vis Europe, which has attendance in the teens or even single digits. So are Europeans over-reporting too? And if so, does that mean that European rates are even lower?? Or is the secularism bias in Europe reversed, such that those who do attend church tell pollsters that they don’t because they’re ashamed to be identified as non-secular?!

The mind reels. Most importantly, though, as both the Prof and I are Catholic, we’ll not be visiting the deep south anytime soon.
