Exploiting Rural Hypocrisy

Posted by Bruno on May 17th, 2005

The point has been made ad nauseum (see Thomas Frank) that the GOP’s economic agenda sells out rural America, despite their rhetoric. In fact, the typical conservative rebuttal to Frank is not that GOP economic policy is good for rural America, but rather, that cultural issues (God, guns, and gays) are an equally valid [...]

Double-Standard Sundays

Posted by Bruno on May 15th, 2005

I was watching some dumb, pretty anchorman on CNN the other day, and he makes the idiotic comment to the effect that, “most presidents are brought down by scandal in their second term, but there haven’t been any scandals in the Bush term.”
Whaa?!
For real? Did he not see this?
See here for a more complete [...]

Sleeper Stat of the Year

According to the newest Pew Center study, “Beyond Red and Blue,” nearly 1 in 5 registered voters are Liberals, and that’s doubled from five years ago:
BASIC DESCRIPTION: This group has nearly doubled in proportion since 1999. Liberal Democrats now comprise the largest share of Democrats.

That’s the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy, for those who flunked out of HillarySpeak 101.
The People for the American Way have a wonderfully detailed list of all the various fronts, most with innocuous-sounding names, that shill the Radical Right agenda. Check it out.
Maybe FOX, MSNBC, and CNN will inform us of this when they [...]

Potential Veto for Gas Tax

Posted by Bruno on May 12th, 2005

This is B.S. A citizen initiative to repeal the just-passed gas tax.
I have an idea: why not just dissolve the state legislature and handle everything by citizen intiative? We could just have secretaries in Olympia send ballots out in the mail every day with an appropriations checklist, and people [...]

Bruno and I had a (too) rare opportunity Wednesday to share a couple pitchers with a friend from Better Donkey.
After a few drinks, we got talking about ways to incentivize corporate owners to insist that their econo-baubbles take a long view on things like the economy. The problem being, as Bruno pointed out, [...]

More evidence that Bruno and I are on to something with our “pro-market progressivism.”
New York Times details how Cambodian textile factories prosper from sound management and good treatment of their workers. This success has come, in part, because consumers are demanding “fair trade” products in ever greater numbers.
This further testament to [...]

Tax Sanity

Posted by Bruno on May 11th, 2005

Tigerhawk has an interesting set of proposals vis-a-vis tax reform. Some of them are pretty sensible, and may even see the light of day sooner or later. Eliminating the mortgage deduction is a tantalizing prospect. On the one hand, it helps people to build equity, which is good, but on the other, [...]

You Forgot Poland…Again!

Posted by Bruno on May 11th, 2005

Seems like the Yalta speech of a few days ago is picking up some steam. Kevin Drum smells a rat:
But most of those people are dead. So who was the reference aimed at? Not just the Latvians, that’s for sure. Bush is a master of using codewords in his speeches, and inserting Yalta into [...]
