Time for Universal Healthcare Yet?

Posted by Bruno on May 21st, 2005

Yesterday I mentioned one reason for Republicans to embrace universal health care: making American businesses more globally competitive. Here’s another:so we can win the f*ing War in Iraq:
About 30 percent of the 4,500 guardsmen called to active duty were discovered to have dental problems so severe they were unfit to go overseas.
..
The problem, Washington [...]

Stem Cells: The Slow-Burning Debate

Posted by Bruno on May 20th, 2005

The debate over Stem Cells will only get more interesting as time passes and medicine marches on. Right now, President Bush is siding with the Religious Right (and, to give him the benefit of the doubt, his own moral convictions) on the issue. But look at the fallout from the decision to limit [...]

Dean’s Doing Pretty Well

Posted by Bruno on May 20th, 2005

How do I know this? Because even Drudge is having a hard time coming up with anti-Dean headlines. Today was a classic: “PAPER: Dems ‘Frustrated’ With DNC Chair Dean’s First 100 Days…” trumpets The Drudge Report. But when you follow the link, you read this:
Some Democrats are frustrated by the contrast between [...]

Olbermann Knows What’s Up

Posted by Bruno on May 19th, 2005

Thank you, Keith:
Whenever I hear Scott McClellan talking about ‘media credibility,’ I strain to remember who it was who admitted Jeff Gannon to the White House press room and called on him all those times.
Whenever I hear this White House talking about ‘doing to damage to our image abroad’ and how ‘people have lost lives,’ [...]

Liberal Conventional Wisdom Watch

Out: “We have to stay in Iraq, otherwise it will collapse in civil war”
In: “We have to leave Iraq, otherwise it will collapse in civil war”
Is it me, or is Colin Powell’s Pottery Barn Rule So Five Minutes Ago?

Quote of the Day

Posted by Bruno on May 18th, 2005

“[T]here has never, in the history of the medium, been a visual disconnect like Samuel L. Jackson whispering into the ear of Yoda.”
- David Edelstien, reviewing Revenge of the Sith.
Bonus Political Points: The dark side of the force as a metaphor for hedonistic moral relativism!
In the dark corner, of course, is future emperor Darth Sidious, [...]

Paranoia Strikes Deep

Posted by Matski on May 18th, 2005

It’s a hallmark of despots and dictators everywhere that they start to become scared of their own shadows.
The greatest tragedy of incidents like this is the ultimate limitation on free speech they engender — the time honored tradition of throwing rotten tomatoes and the like at political nincompoops is no more. And that’s a [...]

Newsweek Garbage

Posted by Bruno on May 17th, 2005

Seriously, folks, this whole Newsweek thing is terrible. I mean, with one careless remark, this magazine has done irreparable damage to America’s standing in the Arab world!
Before this awful, reprehensible article was published, the Arab people loved America. They couldn’t get enough of us. Remember when we invaded Iraq? The Iraqis [...]

Unions Killing Themselves

Posted by Bruno on May 17th, 2005

I’m sorry, but I have a hard time sympathizing with the Alaska Air Baggage Handlers’ unions in this case. It appears that the union is suing to prevent Alaska from outsourcing it’s baggage handling, because you can’t outsource in the middle of negotiations, according to federal law.
I’m no expert on the law here, but [...]

Network TV is Out to Get Me

Posted by Bruno on May 17th, 2005

They’re moving The West Wing to Sundays at 8 next season.
For crying out loud, I watch three TV shows regularly: The West Wing, The Simpsons, and Arrested Development. And now they’re all on at the same time.
It makes sense, given that West Wing fares horribly with the 18-34 set, which is prime [...]
