Il Papa

The former altar boy in me can’t help but be excited by the pagentry surrounding the election of Pope Benedict the XVI. Still, I can’t help but be disappointed that the great and good of the Catholic church couldn’t do better than a former member of the Hitler Youth and an avowed reactionary conservative for the most important spiritual leadership position in the world. (Okay, I know he was 14 when he was drafted into the HY, but still …)

Yet, as I’m fond of mentioning to Bruno, over the grand sweep of time, no institution in history has been as successful as the Catholic church. And while, from where we sit now, glaciers seem to move faster than the church changes, it’s actually been highly successful — again, looking at the very long term — of making the changes it needs to make to survive.

So, here’s hoping Benedict XVI will be blessed with vision and leadership beyond what he seems already to possess, and help the church change to reflect the needs and concerns of our day.
