The Inaugural

I suppose it would be good of me to get a word or two in here about the president’s Inaugural address yesterday. I thought it was eloquent, as a piece of oratory. It will definitely go down in history as a memorable one. I liked the way he talked of freedom and ownership without ever mentioning Iraq or Social Security. Some masterful rhetoric.

It was also an amazingly full-throated defense of neoconservatism, which was surprising. “Defense” is probably the wrong word because this president rarely finds a need to “defend” anything. Still, it was reminiscent of the moment when Lincoln decided that the Civil War was no longer about economics and actually about the moral scourge of slavery. When thousands are dead, and your main justification for war has been eradicated, it helps to have a “nobler purpose” tucked away in your back pocket.
