So I’m pretty sure that Jonah Goldberg is arguing, that, if you have to choose between dead Communists and dead nuns, it’s preferable to have dead nuns. But I could be wrong. I must admit I have a really hard time following the logic in this column. You see, as with most conservative commentators, they tend to get off-track really easily. The obfuscate, because they really don’t have much to say beyond the daily talking points they’ve been handed by Heritage or AEI.
I do think I understand this part, at least well enough to disagree with it:
Most liberals supported the bombings in Yugoslavia, which surely killed large numbers of innocent people. Was that preferable because it was sanitary? Or was it preferable simply because Bill Clinton did it?
Wait a minute… I believe that in Yugoslavia, many liberals, including the Supreme Allied Commander in charge of the opration, Wes Clark, argued in favor of ground troups, which they said would result in fewer civilian casualties. Under pressure from Republicans in congress not to see this thing turn into another Mogadishu, Clark was forced to rely solely on air power, which is more imprecise.
So don’t give us that simplistic “because Clinton did it” crap.
PS, on a side note, I notice Mr. Goldberg uses the phrase, “Iraq effort.” I wonder if that’s the new way to talk about it, to pretend the war is over. It’s interesting. If you Google “Iraq effort,” you get about 9,000 results, mostly from mainstream media outlets. Doing the same with “Iraq war” nets about 5.4 million results, mostly from anti-war sites. Hmm.
