The kid bags a few ducks in Kentucky and suddenly he’s a Republican.

Kidding aside, I do sympathize with this point of view:

Though it sometimes pains me to admit it, President Bush has a defining trait in common with Thomas Jefferson. They are both unbelievably idealistic individuals with a utopian vision of America.

It’s the sentence that follows that kills the argument:

They both believed that people are at their best when government interferes least.

Umm…?? Even if you discount social conservatism (which is a biggie), Bush has wielded the power of the Federal government to such an outrageous degree, that even Utah is screaming for some states’ rights. But those are just the details.

Sweeping visions aside, the details do matter. And the details are what separates the small-r “republicans” from the machinations of the Grand Ol’ Party. So Ryan is right to conclude:

I will continue to vote for the realists, whichever party they reside in, until the starting line is the same for everyone in America and until the world is ready for its own democratic revolution.
