Handicapping the Outsiders

The Washington Monthly has an fun little piece handicapping outsider candidates (Brokaw, Turner, Cosby) for the Dems to run in ‘08. It’s a hoot. Gerstner’s actually my favorite, though I do like Bob Kerrey.

But I’m happy with the number of business folk on the list. It seems to me that you’ve got to cast against type. Ever wonder why all celebrity-politicians are Republicans, while Hollywood maintains a reputation as a bastion of liberalism? It’s casting against type. It’s easy to dismiss a liberal actor-turned-pol. It’s much harder to do that with a conservative actor-turned-pol. You have to stop and think about it. The same holds true for liberal businesspeople.
