Well, it’s getting late and I’ve had a few cocktails, but I’ll wade into the post-debate wrap-up. Everyone is convinced Kerry won, and I can’t disagree. But it seems a bit simplistic to play it like that.
Bush refused to answer any question, instead returning to an attack on Kerry’s alleged flip-flops every time. He was a broken record. Kerry had some moments, but you could tell he was straining.
It seems to me like both guys are stuck in this deadlock where each is afraid to broaden the war of ideas. Kerry keeps coming back to the idea of coalition and allies, but to me that idea has gotten so stale and abstract as to lost meaning. Most Americans don’t really remember what a true coalition looks like.
I dunno — I can’t see it affecting the poll numbers all that much. We’ll see what happens in the other debate. But the important thing is that Kerry went a long way to taking Iraq (or, more appropriately, his position on Iraq), off the table as we go into debate #2.
