Via Drudge, an interesting interview in the L.A. Weekly on the politics of Jay Leno. Truth be told, I always sort of did think he was some kind of Republican shill. The only time I’ve ever really had respect for the guy is in one scene in Jerry Seinfeld’s movie Comedian. Jerry, Jay, Kevin Nealon, and Gary Shandling all sitting around in the green room talking about what they love about stand up. It’s genius. The whole movie coulda been that one scene.
But Leno genuinely surprises me in this interview: “I think some people on the right need to hear this constant reinforcement, whereas I don’t find that necessary,” he says, laying out his politics. He wants us to know that despite his flagrant campaigning for Arnold in the California Recall, he’s really a liberal at heart.
The cherry line comes right here:
I always say comics make the mistake that they start off as comedians, then they become humorists, then they become satirists, then they become commentators, then they’re out of show business.
Umm… can you say Dennis Miller?
