I happened to catch Bush’s speech at the U.N. this morning. Two things struck me:
1. Bush has this habit of using recent historical narrative in his speeches. He likes to give a brief wrap-up of how we got here. He said something like “We needed Saddam to disarm. The UN passed resolution 1441. We acted.” It’s always a selective history, though. Remember when he said that Hussein kicked the inspectors out in the Spring of 2003, when what actually happened was that he told the inspectors to get out because the cruise missles were on their way?
2. Bush gets most animated when he’s arguing against the straw man argument that non-Western (i.e. Muslim) nations cannot form democracies. The Smirk appears, his voice becomes genuinely more animated. It’s something that really gets his goat. Where does he get this straw man argument from?
