Most of you know by now that the Professor and I are pro-choice Catholics, and damn proud of it. It’s disheartening to see stories like this getting so much attention. If this isn’t evidence of the press’ kowtowing to the Bush agenda, I don’t know what is. They’re constantly scrutinizing the man for things that don’t justify it. Kerry served in Vietnam, but Bush went AWOL. And what’s the big story? Whether or not Kerry threw his ribbons or medals away? Who cares? This communion thing is the same way. Bush/Cheney is so desperate to paint this guy as an atheist, that they’ve started pushing this bogus story about whether or not he takes communion at Sunday mass.
As Nick Confessore points out, “Here’s a tip, guys. He does this every Sunday.” Nick also writes:
Pro-choice Catholic Republicans, including Rudy Giuliani, George Pataki, and Tom Ridge, are once again ignored. Granted, they’re not running for president. But still.
Exactly. John Kerry is no more “out of touch” with mainstream American values than that other white-bread New England no-account, George W. Bush.
Look, I know I’m veering off topic here, but this leads me to another point that’s been on my mind. The Bush camp has been working on this thread that Kerry’s been angling for the presidency since he was a boy. Like this is a bad thing. Noam Scheiber has the details, but the gist is Andy Card (Bush’s chief of staff) saying that he knew Kerry from way back when, and he’s been wanting to be President ever since. Somehow this gives Card the chutzpah to deride Kerry as a “wannabe.”
I’m sorry, Mr. Card, but do you really want to go there? I mean, is it a bad thing to have a President whose lifelong ambition was to be president? Especially when you’re going vis-a-vis a guy like G.W. Bush, whose ambition for most of his life was to be a drunk frat boy? A guy whose spent 40 percent of his time as President in one of this three “retreats?” A guy who honestly acts like he could take this job or leave it at any second? Please. Ambition is to be rewarded. Whatever it is that our President has is to be discouraged.
